(Click to see how you can save text and YM logs on your N900)
In Philippines we like Yahoo Messenger (YM) and Friendster (FS) more than Facebook and MSN/Windows Live. Well, for Smart Buddy users its normally ok to install Uzzap to get a good YM client, but N900 does not have Java, so we cant...
So this is how to enable YM on N900! Get it directly in Conversations, just like text messages.
1. enter this page you are on now from your N900 and click this link: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/dists/fremantle/install/account-plugin-haze.install
2. After a while application manager will launch, let it finish installing some "pidgin" protocols.
3. Now open Conversations, click on the word "conversations" on top, click Accounts, then New, then you find Yahoo at the bottom. This is what we just installed.
4. Enter your YM username and password, Click Sign In. And it will not work. Yet. =)
5. Go to settings for the account you just added, and enter something in the box "Screen Name", check "Enabled", and Save. It will work now!
- potential problem: Contacts in your YM list that does not have a name, but only YM ID, will show up in the list as "No name". Click on it and you will see the YM ID (on top of screen). Its best to edit this in your YM adressbook from your PC, or go to yahoo.com and log in there, and edit the adressbook from there, if you can find it... Its not easy to navigate Yahoo IMHO....
EDIT: This problem went away by itself after short time usage, could be a sync issue na lang... So disregard this unless you get the problem.
And finally, i copy and paste from a nokia forum.. "After you have installed the haze plugin, open application manager, bring up the button menu (press top of screen) select application catalogues, select "extras-devel" then tick disabled to disable this catalogue.. this'll stop you accidentally adding MORE experimental code"
My love for my N900 just went off the scale! Integrated YM support was what i missed the most, i have previously used webmessenger and mobile messenger through the web browser, not so great, Mobile messenger will hide the status so you dont know if ur contacts are rily online or "On SMS", and the full version of Webmessenger is a bit slow 2 navigate on N900.
Still, data rates apply, we cant use the 10 Peso Uzzap Unlimited on N900, but Uzzap is over-loaded by too many users and is not relaibale anyway right now. Same happened before with Sun/Digitel iMessenger, and they never upgraded their servers to handle the ever increasing traffic. The way i have come to know Smart/PLDT i am 99% sure they will not also...
